![]() These armed conflicts, in addition to their direct impact on people’s lives and their moral and physical environment, are a serious drain on the scarce resources of the States concerned and are thus prejudicial to the continent’s chances of development. ![]() The Report released on March 1, calls for tougher action against human rights violations, an overhaul of global aid priorities and more attention to education’s potential to foster peace.As the 21st century begins, Africa is the continent most subject to instability, conflicts and wars.Armed conflict is robbing 28 million children of an education by exposing them to widespread sexual violence, targeted attacks on schools and other abuses.Drawing on experience from a range of countries, it identifies problems and sets out solutions that can help make education a force for peace, social cohesion and human dignity. The Report also explores the role of inappropriate education policies in creating conditions for violent conflict. It sets out an agenda for protecting the right to education during conflict, strengthening provision for children, youth and adults affected by conflict, and rebuilding education systems in countries emerging from conflict. The 2011 Global Monitoring Report examines the damaging consequences of conflict for the Education for All goals. Children and education systems are often on the front line of violent conflict. Beyond the immediate human suffering it causes, it is a source of poverty, inequality and economic stagnation.
